WHAT IS ART ?
The factors that define Art are: Originality, An ability to communicate an emotion or message and a transcendence of the literal.
Art involves some personal expression by the maker, as well as expressive choices that are not simply arbitrary. but with an explainable meaning.
Art is not a simple or obvious statement - there is always a depth to it that holds the viewer's interest and allows the work to be reinterpreted over time.
ARTIST STATEMENT
My artwork is driven by a passion to experiment and create. Having worked as an engineer in technology has provided me with years of technical experimentation and risk taking, leading to creative problem solving and new discoveries. I bring all of this experience into my artwork. Inspiration and imagery come from my natural environment of forests, mountains, rocks and marks on the ground and trails, on the trees and in the sky.
I begin with blank spaces. I work with bare copper plates and blank relief plates and white silk. Any preliminary " sketching" is done in my mind or consists of quick marks or words in my journal. I limit pre-planning as I want my imagery, thoughts, and feelings to communicate with the plates and the fabrics as I begin my mark making. Every piece is a new journey through layers of imagery, discovery and my response to the materials. The multi-layered surface that is created allows viewers to look closely through the layers to see and feel the beauty of a place, a mark -and to experience a peaceful moment of discovery.
My work has been exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the United States as well as Asia and toured major venues in Europe . This has allowed viewers from many places to share my interpretations of my visual world in the mountains of Northern Arizona and to observe how silk can be used as an unexpected fine art material.
